A battery-powered FURGO sensor runs for 3 to 5 years on its original battery. When it runs down, there is no need to replace the sensor: this replacement battery gives it a full new cycle for €22.90. That is the no-subscription principle — you pay for a part when it is worn out, not a monthly fee.
A battery built for the field
Lithium thionyl chloride (Li-SOCl2) technology has nothing in common with an off-the-shelf alkaline battery: very low self-discharge, a stable 3.6 V voltage throughout its life, and operation from -55 °C to +85 °C. That is what lets a sensor last several seasons outdoors, including on frost nights, when it transmits the most.
The SPC1520 module soldered onto the battery acts as a buffer: GSM transmissions draw brief current peaks (up to 300 mA) that the cell alone handles poorly. The module absorbs them and protects the whole unit against overcharge and short circuits.
The replacement, in practice
Allow 15 minutes and a Phillips screwdriver (PH1 or PH2). The 2-pin JST connector is keyed: it cannot be plugged in the wrong way round. What is the SPC1520 module for?
It is a protection circuit that absorbs the current peaks of GSM transmissions and protects the battery against overcharge, deep discharge and short circuits. It extends the life of the whole unit.
