VVTrap: a selective Asian hornet trap, from the workshop to online sales
The problem: trapping hornets without emptying the hedgerow
The Asian hornet decimates beehives and plagues orchards. Conventional traps (bottles, cones) catch everything that comes along: bees, butterflies, useful flies. To do good without doing harm, a trap has to sort.
The solution: selectivity through geometry
VVTrap is a selective trap: the entrance dimensions are calibrated to let the Asian hornet through while blocking or releasing other insects. No electronics, no proprietary consumables — just well-thought-out plastic geometry.
What FURGO built
The workshop carried the product from start to finish:
- Design of the plastic parts and field validation of the entrance dimensions.
- Prototyping by 3D printing, with several iterations on the shape.
- Industrialisation by moulding, to move from prototype to series production.
- Sales direct on vvtrap.com and on Amazon, with logistics suited to a seasonal business.
This is a separate activity from our agricultural sensors, but the approach is the same: a simple, robust object, with no subscription. And proof that the design office can take a product from the drawing board to consumer sales — a project of the same kind takes three sentences to describe via the contact page.
