Most of our sensors come in two versions: GSM (SIM card included, self-contained) and LoRa. The LoRa version is cheaper per unit — it carries neither SIM nor data plan — but needs a gateway on the farm: that is the job of Awaro, our LoRaWAN gateway.
The maths is quickly done: from 3 or 4 sensors on the same site, the gateway pays for itself on the price difference between sensor versions, and every additional sensor widens the saving. A single gateway covers several hundred metres to several kilometres depending on terrain — plots, buildings, tanks, apiaries — including where the mobile network does not reach. And everything reports to the same Supervisor, which also accepts LoRaWAN sensors from other brands.
A classic LoRaWAN gateway is only a relay: it picks up the radio signal and forwards it, encrypted, to a server you have to run somewhere — The Things Network cloud, or a ChirpStack instance to install, host and maintain. As long as that server does not answer, your sensors are talking to no one.
This gateway — its name is Awaro — carries its own LoRaWAN server. Your sensors are authenticated on it (OTAA), their readings decrypted on the spot and delivered straight to wherever you want them: over MQTT to Home Assistant, Domoticz, Jeedom or Node-RED, by HTTP webhook to your own business platform, or directly on the USB port. No external service, no subscription, no data leaving the farm without your consent.

The conclusion is simple: below €500, no gateway on the market combines an outdoor housing with a local LoRaWAN server. The affordable models are indoor boxes that depend on a cloud; the self-contained, weatherproof models are industrial products at €500–900. This gateway does both, at entry-level prices — with, on top, power consumption ten times lower than Linux-based gateways (~0.4 W versus 5 to 10 W), which makes it genuinely solar-powerable.

For 1 to 3 isolated sensors, the GSM version (SIM card included) remains the simplest: nothing to install. From several sensors grouped on the same site, the LoRa gateway becomes worthwhile: LoRa sensors cost less and a single gateway collects them all.

Yes: the gateway publishes every reading over MQTT (JSON) to your broker. Domoticz, Jeedom and Node-RED work the same way, and a direct USB stream is also available.
The 4G version (€240 incl. VAT) adds cellular connectivity, with a built-in sensor filter to save on the data plan. On the power side, the gateway draws around 0.4 W at idle: a small solar panel with a battery is enough.
A second, independent microcontroller monitors it permanently and restarts it automatically if needed. It is designed to run alone, for a long time, far away.
Yes: the radio module and the processor module are plug-in parts, and the hardware plans are published (open hardware). No forced end of life.
