The sensor is fitted on the line, measures the pressure at every cycle and calls you if the expected program did not happen. Combined with a soil probe, you check both that the water went out and that it actually reached the roots.
Pressure tells you the essentials in a few seconds: rise = the irrigation is running; no rise = fault; abnormal drop = leak. It is the simplest and most robust measurement to answer the question “did it water last night?”.
