Monitoring your off-road diesel (GNR) tank remotely: a buyer’s guide
It is always the same scenario: the combine has been running since 6 a.m., the grain-cart tractor is shuttling back and forth, and at 2 p.m. the tank nozzle starts sputtering. Out of diesel. The supplier is overloaded, the delivery arrives the next day, the job sits waiting. A gauge checked in time would have been enough — but nobody thought of it, because nobody ever thinks of it at the right moment.
Why monitor your tank remotely
Three practical reasons justify equipping a farm tank.
Avoiding running dry at the height of the season. An empty tank during harvest or sowing means a job at a standstill and an emergency delivery, often billed at a premium because you are ordering with your back against the wall. An automatic alert at 20 or 25% of the volume leaves you time to order calmly.
Ordering when prices are low. The price of diesel moves by several cents a litre from one week to the next. On a 3,000-litre order, a 5-cent difference is €150. When you know your level at all times, you order at the bottom of the market, not when the gauge forces your hand.
Detecting theft or a leak. A tank that loses 200 litres overnight, with no monitoring, nobody notices before the next bill. With regular readings, the abnormal drop shows up immediately on the curve.
The available technologies
The manual gauge. A mechanical float gauge or a graduated dipstick: about thirty euros, no electronics. Two flaws: mechanical gauges end up sticking, and above all you have to walk out there. The reading happens when someone thinks of it — rarely at the right moment, never at night, never during the holidays. And a manual gauge will never detect a theft.
The connected ultrasonic sensor. A unit fixed above the fuel surface sends an ultrasonic pulse and measures the distance to the liquid, with no contact with the diesel — so no drilling into the tank and no touching the fuel. The reading then travels over the mobile network to your phone. This is the technology behind the FURGO tank fill-level sensor as well as most competitors. The differences lie elsewhere: accuracy, battery life, alerts, and above all the business model.
The criteria that really matter
Accuracy. ± 1 cm is more than enough for a diesel tank: on a typical tank, that is a few dozen litres, easily fine enough to trigger a low-level alert or spot an abnormal drop. Also check the measuring range: the FURGO sensor covers 28 cm to 7.5 m, which includes common farm tanks. Watch out for the detection beam (conical, 2 × 20° on the FURGO sensor): a very narrow tank can return the wall instead of the liquid.
Battery life and installation. Steer clear of anything that requires a gateway, a hub or pairing: it is one more failure point and one more dependency. A good sensor runs on a battery for several years, transmits directly over multi-network GSM with its SIM included, and goes into service the moment you switch it on. Nothing to configure, nothing to plug in.
Alerts. A notification in an app gets missed; a phone call does not. The FURGO sensor calls up to 10 numbers in sequence when your threshold is crossed, with SMS and email as back-up. You set the threshold yourself.
The total cost over 5 years. This is the criterion the spec sheets stay quiet about. A €245 sensor with a €48/year subscription costs more than a €286 no-subscription sensor from the second year onwards. And with a subscription, the alerts stop the day you stop paying.

In the first year, the gap is small. From the second year on, FURGO is cheaper. Over five years, the difference approaches €170 — per tank. If you have two or three tanks (diesel, water, a silo), multiply accordingly: the same sensor and the same platform monitor everything, with no extra subscription cost.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to drill into the tank or drain it to install the sensor?
No. The measurement is ultrasonic, with no contact with the fuel. The unit fixes above the surface of the liquid, at a high point of the tank. You switch it on, it transmits — no drilling, no draining, no configuration.
What if my farm has poor coverage from my mobile operator?
The FURGO sensor carries a multi-network SIM: it connects to whatever network is available on site, whichever operator it belongs to. It works anywhere at least one mobile network reaches. In a genuine dead zone, describe your situation to us before ordering.
Is a no-subscription sensor really zero cost afterwards?
Almost. The €286 excl. VAT price covers the sensor, the SIM, the alerts and access to the included platform. The only recurring cost is occasional: a SIM top-up of around €30 around the fourth year, and replacing the battery when it reaches the end of its life. A maintenance expense, not a monthly rent.
