The village weather station does not tell you what fell on your land
A summer storm does not fall evenly. Between two plots a few kilometres apart, the gap can reach 20 mm in a single event. The village weather station — or the app on your phone — gives you a figure, but not yours.
Yet it is the rainfall total on your plot that decides what comes next: was yesterday’s treatment washed off, and do you need to go again? Did the forecast 15 mm actually fall, or should you start an irrigation round? Will the soil carry machinery tomorrow morning? Getting it wrong by 10 mm means a treatment redone for nothing or irrigation triggered by mistake.
Then there is the tube rain gauge, reliable but demanding: you have to go and read it, empty it, write the figure down somewhere. When plots are scattered, the tube round becomes a chore — and a forgotten reading is a lost data point.
